State of the Community: A Critical Conversation for Black Entrepreneurs in 2025

As we navigate the shifting landscape of American business and policy, Black entrepreneurs and professionals face increasing uncertainty about what the future holds. From anti-DEI policies threatening corporate diversity initiatives to ongoing economic struggles affecting small businesses, it has never been more critical for Black business owners to stay informed, engaged, and connected.

That’s why the Black Eco Chamber (BECO) is hosting “The State of the Community”, a vital workshop designed to equip Black entrepreneurs with the knowledge and resources they need to protect and grow their businesses in the face of evolving economic and legal challenges.

This special event, taking place on Saturday, February 15, at 12 PM at Dumas Bay Centre in Federal Way, WA, will feature Jesse Johnson, the Washington State Treasury Department’s Outreach and Community Engagement Director, in an insightful discussion hosted by Shyan Selah. With expertise in state financial policies and economic empowerment, Johnson will provide critical updates on how government changes may impact Black business owners—and what steps we can take to move forward.

Why This Event Matters Now More Than Ever

The current administration’s rollback of DEI initiatives has left many Black professionals feeling vulnerable in corporate and entrepreneurial spaces. Just recently, federal agencies have been forced to eliminate diversity-focused programs, and new executive orders are restricting private companies from implementing DEI strategies in their hiring processes. These policies are not just ideological shifts—they have direct consequences on economic opportunities for Black entrepreneurs, who rely on equitable access to capital, contracts, and business resources.

At the same time, economic challenges continue to hit Black businesses hard. Rising inflation, interest rate hikes, and shifts in global trade policies have made it harder for small businesses to secure funding, retain employees, and scale their operations. Black entrepreneurs—who already face systemic barriers to accessing capital—must now contend with additional financial pressures in an uncertain market.
